Transfer the image
Below are a number of ways that may assist you in transferring an image to the surface of your craft material:
-
Carbon Paper
Simply place the carbon paper on your surface. Place the template sheet on top of that. Trace, with firm pressure, over the outline of your template. Once you remove both layers of paper, the image will show (faintly) on your surface. You can now fill in the missing bits with your pencil or another suitable medium.
-
Stencil
You can transfer your image on to a sturdy material such as cardboard or a transparency. Cut out the image. Place your stencil on your craft surface and draw or paint along the edge

Fancy arty transfer method
Loads of blogs refer to this super simple method of transferring the image. I'll leave it to the pros to demonstrate.

Just wing it
If you're willing to give it a bash, just draw your design on the surface with a pencil. And remember, it doesn't have to be perfect :-D
